Rising to the challenge—from 40 to 70 denier

Creating a shell jacket mountaineers can rely on while navigating a rugged rock face in extreme conditions requires a strategic balancing act for us in the design lab, as we work to combine essential weatherproofness and ease of movement with a great deal of resilience.

The latest evolution of our pinnacle mountaineering jacket, the Spitz GTX Pro II Jacket, takes a successful crack at the equation, uniting the new and lighter GORE-TEX PRO ePE laminate with a higher denier yarn to deliver reliable weatherproofness and next-level durability without excess grams.

The Spitz GTX Pro II Jacket is now 75% tougher.

Denier refers to the linear density of yarn, which has a significant impact on the mechanical properties of a material. The higher the denier, the more resilient a garment is to abrasion and everyday wear and tear. We developed the Spitz GTX Pro II Jacket with nearly double the linear density on the body, increasing from 40 to 70 denier compared to the first-generation jacket.

“Knowing we would transition to the lighter GORE-TEX PRO ePE laminate this season, we seized the opportunity to make the next-generation Spitz GTX Pro Jacket even more of a workhorse for mountaineers,” says Oscar Darle, Material Technologist Manager at Haglöfs.

“By going from 40 to 70 denier, we are creating a jacket that is even tougher and more durable than before—and hopefully a companion mountaineers can count on for many, many years of adventures to come.”
