A true adventure

Far above the Polar Circle, surrounded by mountains, lies Vassijaure. In the beginning of May the sun is up almost all night, but the snow is still cold and there’s a good chance for fresh powder. If you love skiing or snowboarding, Haglöfs Ski Camp is an unforgettable experience in the wilderness. Stay in a large base camp at the foot of the mountain together with others who share your passion. This is a weekend that will provide memories for life.

Novice or expert?

Haglöfs Ski Camp is an experience beyond the ordinary. Everyone is welcome, but some mountain experience is recommended. In addition to ski touring, we arrange avalanche training and learn more about the mountains.

Accommodation

The base camp consists of spacious tents equipped with sleeping bags, pillows and reindeer skins on the floor. Four people will be sharing each tent. There’s no shower, but the sauna tent is warm and the snow is refreshing. In order to leave no trace behind, there are dry toilets on site. We spend the evenings together in large cozy tents with long tables and a warm atmosphere, or in the mellow light of the midnight sun.

Culinary experience

Every night we serve a three-course dinner at long tables in large cheerful canvas tents. The food is based on local produce such as reindeer, char, almond potatoes and cloudberries. Alcoholic beverages are sold separately. Every morning a hearty breakfast is served, and for lunch all participants get to bring along REAL fieldmeals.

Select skill level

Every day, experienced licensed guides lead ski tours where we go on skins uphill and ride down on skis or snowboards. Based on experience and stamina, we divide into three levels. You select your level based on your ability, previous experience and how long you want to be out in the mountains. The shortest excursions are 4 hours and the longest are 9 hours. Each group has the same guide throughout the camp, but switching between groups is possible. Everybody gathers in the camp after each day’s adventure. We always adapt to weather and snow conditions.

The Journey

Travel sustainably with Malmbanan or take highway E10 to Vassijaure. Here we welcome you, and transport your luggage to the camp, while you walk on skins for about two kilometers. Please note that you are responsible for bringing your own equipment. If you need to rent or buy equipment, Björkliden 25 km away, or Riksgränsen 10 km away are the closest options. We strongly recommend pre-booking equipment and pick-up time. Once you arrive in Vassijaure there are no stores or shops, so make sure to bring everything along.

Vassijaure is a train station “in the middle of nowhere”. There are no shops or ski lifts here. You are responsible for bringing your own equipment to the station, and we will transport it to the camp.

Focus on safety

Expeditions in the mountain wilderness, with untouched snow, is a wonderful experience. But it also requires knowledge. It is crucial to make decisions with a safety-oriented mindset. To minimize risks, we work with professional, licensed guides. Our head guide is Martin "Bruce" Lundberg, internationally certified mountain guide at IFMGA.

FAQ

  • Info meetings

Preparations are key to enjoying the experience. We arrange one digital information meeting where we’ll go through the plan and answer questions. Date to be confirmed.

  • Schedule

The planning will adapt to the weather conditions. Each day starts with everybody having breakfast together between 07 and 09. The guide for each group will go through the plan and head out. The length of each day’s excursion depends on the group’s preferences and experience level. After each day everyone gathers at the base camp for an après-ski. The sauna will be hot Friday and Saturday afternoon, snacks and drinks are available at the bar, and probably there will even be some live music. At 19 we’ll have a three-course dinner based on local produce before eventually retiring to our tents, hopefully under glimmering Northern lights.

    See the full schedule here.

  • What do I need to bring?

All personal equipment must be brought along by the participants. The nearest ski shop and ski rental is Riksgränsen (10 km) or Björkliden (25 km). A complete list of equipment can be viewed here (PDF) and also sent out after registration. Your luggage will be stowed under your bed. Remember to use waterproof bags.

  • Can you switch levels during the camp?

Yes, you can. Select a skill level at registration. After the first day we gather in the camp and evaluate, and if someone wants to change their level for the next day trip, we’ll sort it out.

  • What level should I register for?

Choose the level based on your self-evaluated stamina and experience.

    Level 1:

Not that experienced at ski touring but would like to learn more. About 5 hours / day.

Examples of tours: Vassi peak, Forskaren, Trollsjön up/down

    Level 2:

Intermediate experience, some previous knowledge but still more to learn. About 7 hours/day.

Examples of tours: Vassi peak plus Forskaren, Vassi - Laire, Kärketjorro, Låkta

    Level 3:

Proper experience from ski touring in various conditions. Good knowledge and stamina. 7-9 hours/day.

Examples of tours: The Horseshoe traverse, Voitas triangle

  • What happens if the weather is bad?

If the weather or snow conditions do not allow us to carry out the ski tours planned for the day, we’ll find other activities that are better suited for the conditions. The area offers a lot of exciting and fun activities. Safety is important, and so is the joy of being outside. If weather conditions make it impossible to set up tents, we will relocate the camp. We guarantee laughter and great comradery every day.

  • Why is Haglöfs Ski Camp arranged at Vassitjåkka?

Haglöfs have been manufacturing outdoors equipment since 1914. Ten years ago, we launched the first Vassi series, a free skiing collection intended for environments such as the area surrounding Vassitjåkka. Since then, we have expanded the collection and added Vassi Touring, adapted for adventures further from the ski system, made from lighter and even more breathable material but still with trustworthy durable weather protection. At Haglöfs Ski Camp you will get to experience the surroundings for which these garments were originally intended.
