Calling for bolder steps at COP28

November 2023

As an outdoor brand, we recognize our significant impact on the environment and we are dedicated to reducing our environmental footprint. But in order to make a meaningful difference, we need governments and world leaders to take bolder steps. This means setting clear goals and providing incentives and rules that benefit not only our industry but the business sector as a whole. The upcoming 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) presents a perfect opportunity for this.

Here are the action steps we at Haglöfs seek from governments and world leaders at COP28:

Emission Reduction Targets

We advocate for ambitious climate targets, not only from COP28 but from governments worldwide. Recognizing our significant carbon footprint as a textile producer, governments must enforce these targets and assist our shift to renewable energy sources and improved energy efficiency in our manufacturing facilities.

Sustainable Materials and Practices

Promoting sustainable materials and manufacturing practices is a shared mission among us outdoor brands and governments. We request that governments implement policies and rules that encourage responsible resource use, waste reduction, and the adoption of better practices. We also stress the importance of sustainable water management, including water-saving technologies and measures to reduce water pollution. Additionally, we advocate for strict rules to protect consumers and the environment from harmful chemicals in our products and manufacturing.

Supply Chain Transparency

To ensure transparency throughout our supply chains, from sourcing raw materials to the final product, we call for government involvement in establishing rules and incentives. World leaders can create a universal standard for transparent supply chains that benefits both our industry and consumers.

Circular Economy Initiatives

The transition to a circular economy is a primary focus for us. Governments need to speed up this transition by providing incentives, such as systems for recycling, reusing, and repurposing materials, which reduce waste and decrease the demand for new raw materials.

Collaboration and Research

COP28 should facilitate collaboration among stakeholders in the outdoor industry, including governments, businesses, NGOs, and research institutions. Governments and world leaders need to actively support and fund research and innovation in sustainable textiles, materials, and production methods. This collaborative effort can steer the industry toward a more sustainable future.

As an outdoor brand with a significant impact on the environment, we need governments to take action to help us continue reducing our impact. COP28 is a huge opportunity for governments to pursue the bolder steps that are needed and demonstrate their commitment to a sustainable future—and we urge them to seize it.

It’s time to get to work, all of us.
