Standard issue black™

Standard issue black™
Presenting a new standard
Every year, outdoor brands order countless rolls of fleece in almost identical shades of black. Each one demands its own dye process, creating unnecessary complexify and impact.
Standard Issue Black™ is a new standard presented by Haglöfs and Polartec: a shared black, pre-dyed at scale, and available to the whole industry.

R&D Study – The Black Capsule
The initiative is demonstrated through the Black Capsule a limited collection created using existing Polartec leftover fabrics in multiple black variations.
Rather than creating something new, the capsule brings these variations together to make the implications of today’s fragmented approach to black visible, and to set the context for a shared standard going forward.
“Color choices have long-term consequences,” says Eva Weiss, Head of Design at Haglöfs. “We approach color with great attention to detail, understanding how materials and construction influence a shade. By working towards a clear standard, we reduce unnecessary variation while maintaining design integrity. It’s precision with purpose, supporting longevity in both function and expression.” says Eva Weiss, Head of Design

Black Capsule Project Tee
This product challenges an outdated industry system. Crafted from Polartec® Micro fleece leftovers, the unisex tee is assembled from three shades of black - each pattern piece marked with its original color batch number. A visual statement of over-customization: when every color is customized, the impact is multiplied. Creating fabric left-over stocks, complexity, higher prices and less sustainable dye processes.

Black Capsule Project Pant
These unisex pants in a relaxed silhouette deliver progressive comfort, while the 100% mono-material construction ensures full recyclability at end of life. It features an adjustable drawcord waist, open side leg pockets, internal adjustable leg opening endings, and a rear hanger loop. Engineered from leftovers, built for circularity, and designed for a long-term, industry-shaping project.

Presenting a new standard
Responsible design starts early. Choices on materials, durability, and repairability dramatically shape a product’s impact. We aim for long lasting gear, lower impact materials, and industry collaboration to help reduce complexity, conserve resources and support more responsible product development over time.
Standard Issue Black™ will enter production for the first time in Haglöfs’ FW26 season, marking the transition from concept to implementation.
