Care and repair
How to care for down products
Down garments are high-performance insulation pieces, and proper maintenance is essential to preserve loft, warmth, and long-term durability. With periodic cleaning and routine care, your down gear will continue to perform as effectively as the day you bought it.
Maintaining insulating performance
Down relies on natural oils to maintain loft and water repellency. Frequent washing removes these oils, so it’s better to air out your down garments regularly rather than wash them too often. Simply hang the item in a dry, ventilated space to restore freshness and maintain loft.
Storage
Store down garments in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Use a loose cotton storage bag or hang the garment—never store down compressed in a stuff sack for long periods, as this reduces loft and overall insulation efficiency. Always ensure the garment is fully dry before storing.

Washing
Occasionally, your down jacket will require washing, as sweat, oils, and dirt can weigh down the clusters. Washing may seem intimidating, but when done correctly, it restores loft and overall performance. Use only down-specific detergents, as harsh formulations can damage the fibers. These detergents are available at most outdoor specialty stores.
Washing instructions
Step 1: Rinse
If possible, pre-rinse the garment without detergent to fully saturate the fabric and allow the down wash to penetrate effectively.
Step 2: Wash
Wash at a low temperature and low spin speed using a down-specific detergent—or, if unavailable, a small amount of mild liquid detergent (about one-third the recommended dose). Do not use fabric softeners, bleach, or detergents containing bleach.
Step 3: Rinse again
After washing, run an extra rinse cycle without detergent to remove all residue.
Drying instructions
Step 1: Tumble dry
Tumble dry on low heat with two or three clean tennis balls to help break up clumps and restore loft. Drying can take several hours. Do not remove the garment prematurely — the garment may feel dry on the outside but still retain moisture internally.
Step 2: Fluff up the down
Every 30 minutes, remove the garment from the dryer, break up any clumped areas by hand, and fluff the down to ensure even drying. Once fully dry, store the garment uncompressed in a cool, dry place.
Do not iron.
Note:
Some insulated products use loose synthetic fibers engineered to replicate down — for example, Essens Mimic styles. Like down, these fills may clump during washing and drying. Regularly shaking out the garment helps prevent bunching.

How to patch a down jacket
Most of Haglöfs’ insulated jackets — both down and synthetic — use lightweight, high-strength fabrics, but they can still be punctured. To repair small holes, follow these steps using self-adhesive, pressure-sensitive repair tape or patches available at most outdoor stores:
Repair instructions
Step 1: Clean
Clean and dry the area around the hole, removing loose dirt without machine washing.
Step 2: Trim loose threads
Trim any loose threads and gently push any escaping feathers back inside. Do not pull feathers out.
Step 3: Prepare the patch
Prepare your patch. If trimming is needed, draw an oval or another rounded shape large enough to leave at least a 1 cm margin around the hole.
Step 4: Cut the patch
Cut the patch carefully, ensuring rounded edges to prevent peeling.
Step 5: Peel off the backing
Peel away the backing without touching the adhesive.
Step 6: Place the patch
Place the patch over the hole and press firmly. Smooth out air bubbles using your fingernail or a tool with smooth edges, such as a credit card.
Step 8: Apply pressure
Apply firm pressure briefly to secure the bond.
Your jacket is now ready for more adventures.
How to reactivate or reproof a garment
Most insulated products have a light water-repellent finish and can be reproofed to maintain their original performance. Periodic washing and reactivation of the water-repellent treatment are essential.
Reactivate or reproof Instructions
Step 1: Wash
Wash the garment following the instructions above.
Step 2: Wash again with products
Before tumble drying, run a second wash cycle — this time adding a waterproofing product made specifically for down, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step 3: Tumble dry
Tumble dry according to the instructions above.
Step 4: Tumble dry again to reactivate DWR
Once the garment is dry, tumble for an additional 20 minutes to reactivate the DWR.
