How to prepare for your summer hike

Summer is a long-awaited hiking season in Sweden. Warmer temperatures bring the outdoor landscape into full bloom and open up new trails to explore in the north, while extended daylight hours allow you to stay out longer. Here, we cover the basics of summer hiking in Sweden to help you make the most of your experience—whether you’re embarking on a day hike or a multi-day adventure.

Planning and safety

The best hiking experiences start with a solid plan.
Begin by researching the area you want to explore, then follow these tips:

  • Check the weather forecast and trail conditions
  • Hike with friends
  • Inform someone of your plans
  • Assess supply needs
  • Evaluate your fitness levels
  • Book accommodations if needed

What to wear

Although summer typically brings warm and sunny days, the weather can be unpredictable in Sweden, with unexpected rain showers or chilly winds. Nights can also get quite cold. It’s important to choose your clothing carefully. We recommend opting for lightweight, technical layers that allow you to adjust based on the conditions without feeling weighed down. And come prepared with extra layers—the conditions can change fast!

Follow the 3-layer principle—even in summer

Base Layer: Wicks away sweat and keeps you comfortable

We recommend a wool or wool-blend t-shirt for its moisture-wicking properties, breathability, and ability to regulate temperature. If you are sensitive to the sun or expect a lot of mosquitoes on the trail, consider wearing a long-sleeved shirt as your base.

Mid Layer: Traps body heat and keeps you warm.

We recommend a lightweight, non-bulky option that fits comfortably beneath a jacket or between your other layers. Look for features like extra breathability, a hood, stretch, or pockets.

Outer Layer: Helps repel the elements and keeps you dry.

We recommend a soft and durable hooded softshell that you can easily pull on over your other layers during windy or rainy conditions.

Your outfit checklist

  • Moisture-wicking underwear
  • Base layer
  • Mid layer
  • Shell jacket
  • Shell pants (optional)
  • Pants, shorts, or zip-off pants
  • Hiking boots or hiking shoes (choose footwear based on expected terrain, mileage, and weight of your load)
  • Hiking socks
  • Hat or cap
  • Backpack

What to pack

Planning your packing carefully and minimizing it to the essentials not only helps you keep the weight of your backpack down but also enhances your comfort and enjoyment on the trail. Here are our packing recommendations for day hikes and multi-day hikes:

Day hike packing list

  • Extra clothing (e.g., shell pants, extra socks, another mid-layer)

How to pack

Step 1: Start by laying out all your gear and organizing it into stuff sacks.

Step 2: Place light and soft items at the bottom of your bag, such as your sleeping bag, extra insulation layers, and a change of clothes.

Step 3: Position solid and heavy items closest to your back. This includes food, canisters, climbing gear, tools, and your tarp or tent.
