Antibacterial agents have long been a common component of training and outdoor clothing to address odors. Often, manufacturers use silver ions or other antibacterial agents because of their ability to kill bacteria that are responsible for producing bad odors. However, these antibacterials don’t just kill odor generating bacteria – they may also pose a threat to other living organisms since they rarely stay in the garment forever. When you wash the garment, the antibacterials can come out with the washing water and bleed into our water systems. In many cases, antibacterial substances are completely out of the gar-ment after as little as ten washes.
These antibacterial substances don’t discriminate against good and bad bacteria either. They can actually damage the very bacteria needed to purify the water. Several pose health risks to humans by negatively affecting our ability to reproduce while others are suspected to increase our resistance to antibiotics.
Anti-odor instead of antibacterial
Our solution is called LAVA™, an anti-odor treatment that is not a biocidal product, and therefore, does not kill any living organisms. Instead, it is made of zeolites, which are microporous minerals and found in volcanic ash but also in water and air purification filters. Zeolites are also used in laundry detergents in-stead of phosphorus to soften hard water. The type of agent we use is made to maintain very high purity.
The LAVA™ treatment, which of course is bluesign® approved, resembles the pores of a sponge or a pum-ice stone, where sweat is absorbed on the large internal surface so that bacteria cannot accumulate and thereby, emit bad odors. Every wash rinses out the sweat particles from the microporous zeolites and restores the anti-odor function
In addition to being safer for the environment, zeolites are considerably better for retaining the quality and functionality of clothes, well beyond even 30-50 washings. Innovations like LAVA™ are critical in ad-dressing many of our industry's impacts and a good example of solutions that already exist to help us make great products that are also better for the environment.
A sustainable outdoor industry.
