Temperature-tested sleeping bags for winter

Almost all sleeping bags available in Sweden follow a temperature grading standard called EN-13537 – a European standard designed to specify sleeping bag temperatures. Thanks to this standard, you can easily compare different sleeping bag options based on your personal needs. The various ratings are:

  • Comfort temperature – the lowest possible temperature for average-built women to sleep comfortably in the sleeping bag.
  • Limit temperature – the temperature at which an average-built man can spend the night in the sleeping bag without getting too cold.
  • Extreme temperature – the temperature at which an average-built woman can survive for 6 hours in the sleeping bag.

Winter sleeping bags in down or synthetic material

A sleeping bag filled with down has unbeatable heat-insulating properties and can also be compressed to nearly nothing. In this way, down sleeping bags are optimal for use on trips or mountain hikes when you want the lightest possible pack. Winter sleeping bags in synthetic fibers, on the other hand, are less expensive than down sleeping bags but take up more space in the backpack and are a bit heavier. Synthetic sleeping bags, however, retain heat better in damp environments compared to down, which is better suited for dry conditions. In other words, it is a good idea to consider what your needs are for your winter sleeping bag and in what type of environment and weather you will use it. For really cold and snowy nights outdoors, a down variant might be best, while a synthetic model is practical when snow mixed with rain is falling from the sky and the temperature is around freezing.
