Bruce Goodlad is an IFMGA mountain guide and outdoor author living and working full time in the Alps.
I have been climbing and mountaineering for over 20 years I have been lucky enough to follow my passion for the mountains and wild places for fun and as a job. I now live close to Chamonix with my wife Kate which gives amazing access all types of mountain terrain on foot, skis or bike.
I was brought up on the West of Scotland where my parents who both worked as teachers had a passion for sailing, every summer was spent sailing on the west coast then aged about 16 I was introduced to climbing and I have never looked back. A classical apprenticeship in walking and mountaineering led to winter and alpine climbing then onto skiing and ski touring.
I am now involved in the training and assessing of guides and take over the role of Technical Director in the autumn this year.
I have been lucky enough to be supported by Haglofs for the past 4 years, since being introduced to their kit I have been constantly impressed by their attention to detail and desire to make top quality products that meet the need of the end user.
The great thing about living in the Alps and working as a guide is the variety in the activities available and the changing of the seasons. An average year is skiing from the minute there is enough snow on the ground which leads from days tours and off piste skiing to ski touring hut to hut in the alps and in more exotic locations.
Skiing usually finishes early May unless I am going on an expedition then its a spring of rock climbing and biking before the summer guiding season begins in the Alps. I generally travel all over the Alps depending on weather and conditions to find the best objectives for my clients.
I usually have a couple of weeks off in August to get some climbing done for myself or just to give my body a rest from guiding. Summer work finishes late September which gives the autumn for a trip somewhere with Kate and get some writing done.
