PRODUCTION AND ENVIRONMENT

One of the most important factors in Haglöfs’ efforts to limit negative environmental impact is the development of high quality products with a timeless design – products with a long life cycle and which are not of a throwaway nature. Our designers also have to pass sustainability training so that they are better able to create the right products from the very beginning of the design process. But we don't just leave things there.

Our customers demand water-repellent, waterproof and breathable products, and chemicals are essential in achieving these characteristics. We need to maintain full control of the chemicals used in the manufacture and post-production treatment of our products. One of the ways we achieve this is by listing the chemicals we prohibit our suppliers from using in the production of fabrics and accessories. We diligently follow national legislation and REACH, the EU chemicals regulations that maintain strict control of undesirable chemicals.

We have also signed up to bluesign® – a voluntary initiative among textile companies that encourages fabric and equipment suppliers to improve their production in order to meet the strict environmental, health and safety standards that bluesign demands. Once the improvements have been implemented, suppliers may sell their fabrics to us as bluesign approved. We then know that the fabrics are produced in accordance with the most stringent environmental certification currently in existence, and that the products are therefore safe for humans and the environment.

We continually review our environmental objectives with the aim of constantly improving our efforts in order to reduce our overall environmental impact.

bluesign

The bluesign® system assures the highest level of consumer safety, minimum impact on people and the environment and a responsible use of resources. When we choose a bluesign® certified material we are sure that it meets our high demands on environment, health and safety. A Haglöfs product carrying the label bluesign® product is made from at least 90% bluesign® approved fabric and at least 30% bluesign® approved accessories. We made a decision that by 2012, 30% of our sold clothing should be bluesign® products. We reached 33%. For 2015, we are aiming for 80% bluesign® approved garments. PFOA free

Many of our fabrics are treated with durable water repellent (DWR) to keep you dry, warm and clean for longer. Where it is possible without compromising the high level of functionality of our garments, we use more environmentally friendly DWR treatments.

C6 DWR (PFOA free) DWR treatment is completely free from perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and has a significantly reduced content of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and has excellent functionality while causing less harm to the environment.

PFC free

Many of our fabrics are treated with durable water repellent (DWR) to keep you dry, warm and clean for longer. Where it is possible without compromising the high level of functionality of our garments, we use more environmentally friendly DWR treatments.

Fluorocarbon/PFC free DWR is totally free from all perflourinated chemicals (PFC)  (including PFOS and PFOA), free from other halogenated substances and free from alkylphenolethoxylates. The drawback is that it the oil repellency and the durability of this DWR are slightly lower that than for a PFC-containing DWR treatment and therefore re-treatment for water repellency may be necessary at an earlier point in time.

Recycled

At Haglöfs a product where 50 percent or more is made from recycled materials is referred to as recycled. The actual percentage of recycled material for a specific product is presented on the care label. In 2012, 30% of sold products in our clothing segment were made of recycled materials. The goal for 2015 is 50%.

LAVA

LAVA™ is a bluesign® approved anti-odor treatment based on minerals borne from volcanic ash. It adsorbs and then captures odors, it doesn't neutralize or mask it. LAVA™ then releases the odors during the wash/dry cycle and it's ready to go again.
