TANIA NOAKES

Cross Country Skiing, Biathlon, Ski Touring and Alpine Mountaineering

I've been fortunate to be able to follow my passion for mountaineering and adventuring during most of my adult life. I started climbing whilst studying at Bristol University and since then my travels have taken me all over the world.  From classic rock climbing in the USA, to exploratory alpine climbing in the Antarctic.

There is a magic about time spent in the mountains, moments shared with friends current and future that helps us reconnect with the important things in life.  Beauty, challenge, exploration, adventure…  the excitement and wonder of life!

My most memorable days in the mountains have been when I've been fully engaged in the commitment required on a long Alpine Ridge or Face climb. Or when racing daylight or the weather to complete a long and challenging ski-traverse through the Alps.  Last year my partner and I completed the classic ski tour from Chamonix to Zermatt over the plateau du couloir in 25hrs.... this coming winter I have my eye on doing this faster still.

I am currently training to be an IFMGA Mountain Guide and have just qualified as a BMG Aspirant Guide.  I will be working this summer out in the European Alps.  My Haglofs clothing and equipment are essential not just for staying warm and dry whilst out in the mountains for work and play… but also a good professional image too.

During the winter I coach Classic and Skate cross-country skiing as well as Biathlon. I am a fully qualified BASI ISIA Cross-country ski Coach and National Rifles Association Biathlon Shooting Coach.

Exped/Race history: Currently working as an Aspirant BMG Mountain Guide and coaching cross country skiing and biathlon during the winter months.

I am a former member of the GB Cross Country Ski Team and was GB Champion in 10km Cross Country Classic in 2006, GB Champion in 10km Mass start Biathlon and British Biathlon Union Overall Club Champion in 2008. After the 2008 race season I chose to take a break from racing to concentrate on my Guiding profession.  I hope to commence racing again this winter season and am training for several FIS Marathon cup ski races around the European Alps.  I also have a rematch with the Haute Route on the cards…

My favourite gear

SPIRE Q JACKET

The Spire Q jacket is  lightweight yet not fragile, and my estimate at this stage that it will be able to withstand the rigours of ski touring and summer alpinsim well, but isn't heavy or bulky at all!  The fit is great and combine that with the colour and it's a real pleasure to wear.  It is also very breathable and I can wear it comfortably whilst skinning uphill.

Spire Q Jacket
A reinforced Gore-Tex® Active Shell Jacket that is extremely breathable and durable, with details such as mountain helmet compatible hood and two chest pockets.
