RUNNING WILD

RUNNING WILD

Pennine Way, Edale, northern England, day 19.

This Running Wild expedition was not about as fast as possible, but about as beautiful as possible. That is why I chose trailrunning, on National Trails like the Pennine Way and on no paths at all through the wilderness of Knoydart, Torridon and Wester Ross in the Scottish Highlands.

RUNNING WILD

RUNNING WILD

Cumbria Way, Keswick, Lake District, day 25

Of course I had (more than) my fair share of bad weather during this 48 days trailrun experience. You get wet, and often even wetter; you get beaten by wind, and often by storm; you get cold and therefore you always keep on running. There were days of 50 km of only mountains, valleys and rivers before I crossed another road; there were days of meeting not a single person. This all adds. It builds up to the believe that - even it often is far from easy - this is the life you want to live.

RUNNING WILD

RUNNING WILD

Buachaille Etive Mór, Scotland, day 35

My goal (and dream) with this Running Wild expedition was to cross wild mountain places on foot while bivouacing outdoors, 2000 km from the very south to the very north of Great Britain. Experiencing rugged nature doesn't always have to take place in far-away-corners of the earth and doesn't have to cost a fortune.

RUNNING WILD

RUNNING WILD

Devils Staircase, Glencoe, Scotland, day 36

Dancing on a Devils Staircase is of course a bit tricky. Not because this piece of mountain is so dangerous, but because of its name. And because 2000 km of solo and unsupported trailrunning can become a serious thing. Yet it should not get too serious altogether: my main reason for the whole expedition was meant to have fun in the outdoors, so this little 'dance' I dedicate to the joy of exactly that!

RUNNING WILD

RUNNING WILD

Loch Meadie, Northern Scotland, day 47

It was my very last evening camping wild during my 48-day trail run of the British Fells End-to-End and this magic evening had it all: the freedom and silence that is why I am out there in the first place.

JOLANDA LINSCHOOTEN

ALLROUND ADVENTURER, PHOTOGRAPHER AND JOURNALIST

Jolanda is an allround adventurer, photographer and journalist, always looking for new outdoor challenges.

Her trips to Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Scandinavia and the Alps among others, have resulted in outdoor articles, hiking and paddling guides, which she hopes inspire outdoor people to visit new places.

Jolanda's love for wild places made her cross the Greenland icecap together with husband Frank van Zwol. She has also solo-skied through northwest Canada in the company of a husky, to explore the wilderness of the Richardson Mountains and arrive in the native settlement of Old Crow, where the Vuntut Gwichin First Nation live out their vision of wilderness.

In 2011, Jolanda was the winner of the TDS race, which is a part of the UTMB. TDS, or "Sur les Traces des Ducs de Savoie", is a wild and technical ultra marathon in the Alps.

In April and May 2013, Jolanda did Running Wild - powered by Haglöfs, a solo running adventure, crossing Great Britain all the way from Land's End in the south to John O'Groats in the north. Without a support crew, 2000 km cross country on foot and bivouacing overnight. The project combines Jolanda's ultrarunning passion & professional adventure business with her love for wild and lonely places. The target was not to cover the distance as fast as possible, but experiencing wild places as intense and active as possible by running beautiful long distance paths (West Coast Trail, Offa's Dyke, Cumbria Way, Hadrian's Wall, The Pennine Way, West Highland Way) and once in the wild Scottish Highlands, by following no paths at all across the mountains.

My favourite gear

GRAM Q JACKET

Gram Q Jacket & Gram Q Pants are my favourites while running long hours in severe country or circumstances. Because both jacket and pants keep me warm in strong wind, cold and rain; but even better, they are breathable enough to not completely soaken underneath while being active; and they are lightweight, nice flexable and have an extremely good cut. This is why I take them both with me during Running Wild - my 6-week crossing of Britain along wild countryside.
